Kansas City’s Growing Commitment to Women’s Sports

Kansas City is making significant strides in promoting women’s sports, solidifying its reputation as a supportive environment for female athletes.

Professional Teams and Facilities

The Kansas City Current, a professional women’s soccer team, has recently opened a state-of-the-art stadium and training complex in Riverside. This $52 million facility includes a 2,000-seat stadium for the KC Current II, the club’s second team established in 2025 to bridge youth, college, and professional levels of women’s soccer. The Netherlands national team has selected this complex as their training base for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting its world-class standards.

In addition to soccer, the Kansas City Diamonds, the city’s first professional softball team, have launched ticket sales for their inaugural season in the Professional Softball League (PSL). Their home opener is scheduled for June 17 at Legends Field in Kansas City, Kansas. This development marks a significant step toward building a sustainable future for women’s sports in the region.

High School and Community Initiatives

Local high schools are also expanding opportunities for female athletes. Notre Dame de Sion High School offers a variety of sports, including cross country, field hockey, golf, softball, tennis, volleyball, basketball, swimming and diving, flag football, lacrosse, soccer, and track and field. These programs emphasize teamwork, self-discipline, and courage, providing students with a high-performance environment.

Similarly, Cristo Rey Kansas City offers interscholastic sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, and cheerleading for both boys and girls. The school emphasizes character development through athletics, aligning with the broader community’s commitment to fostering sportsmanship and personal growth among student-athletes.

Citywide Commitment

Mayor Quinton Lucas has expressed a strong desire for Kansas City to become the global capital of women’s sports. This ambition is supported by investments in venues like Municipal Auditorium and the establishment of teams such as the KC Current and the Diamonds. Despite facing competition from other cities, Kansas City’s dedication to enhancing facilities and supporting women’s sports teams underscores its commitment to this goal.

Through these initiatives, Kansas City is fostering a vibrant environment for women’s sports, offering athletes at all levels the resources and support needed to excel.
